Audit recommendation trackers by country

Last checked: 19 October 2026 · How audits work

Recommendation status is published in different ways. The US Government Accountability Office places open and closed status on report pages and maintains a recommendations database 1,2. The UK National Audit Office provides a recommendations tracker, with government responses recorded separately in parliamentary material 3,4. Other audit offices publish follow-up reports rather than a live database. Check the status definition, the reporting date and whether closure means verified implementation or an administrative decision.

United States

GAO report pages list recommendations and status. HealthCare.gov reports, for example, show recommendations as closed and implemented, with later action dates on the individual entries 1.

GAO provides a recommendations database for searching agency and report records. Read the action text, not only the open or closed label 2.

United Kingdom

The National Audit Office publishes an interactive recommendations tracker 3. Public Accounts Committee recommendations and departmental replies appear through committee reports and Treasury Minutes 4.

The audit recommendation and the committee recommendation may be related but are not interchangeable. Record which body issued each one.

Canada

The Office of the Auditor General publishes follow-up audits and recommendation tables within report pages. A later audit may test whether action was satisfactory, incomplete or too early to assess. Search the office's report archive by department and subject 5.

Australia

The Australian National Audit Office publishes performance-audit reports and entity responses. Later audits can revisit a programme, but there is not always one public page that closes every earlier recommendation 6.

Kenya and other report-based systems

Some audit offices publish special, annual and follow-up reports rather than a recommendation database. Kenya's Auditor-General groups special audit reports on an official index 7. Parliamentary reports and later audits may carry the follow-up record.

How to interpret status

Check whether the audit office verified the action, relied on an agency statement or closed the item for another reason. Note the last update. If no tracker exists, compare the original recommendation with the management response, parliamentary record and next audit.

Common questions

Does closed always mean implemented?

No. Read the tracker definition and action note. Some systems distinguish implemented, no longer valid and other closure reasons.

What if there is no tracker?

Use follow-up audits, annual reports, parliamentary responses and the audited body's records.

Can an agency mark its own recommendation complete?

An agency may report completion, but state whether the audit office independently verified it.
